paragraph 2 of my despatch No.141 of the 26th of July:
with regard to the proposed appointment of Mr Craig as
Assistant Superintendent of the Gaol; to my telegram
of the 17th of August in which I have requested you to
forward the draft estimates for 1900 at the earliest
possible date, and to my despatch No.17 of this day's
date.
8. I do not understand why the salary suggested
for this post, viz: $3,500 a year, is the same as that
of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, to whom the
new officer would be subordinate. Moreover, from Mr
May's minute of the 1st July enclosed in your despatch,
it appears doubtful whether even this rate of
salary would be enough to attract an officer of the
Punjab Police.
4. I am expecting to receive a further despatch
of S.to Sir H.Blake from you on the Police Force in continuation of the 20.046 11 Nov. 1898
Sir Blake to S. of 8

of S.to Sir H.Blake 01.10 May 99

Sir,
